Freiband and Collaborators Reimagine ‘Her Opponent’

Andrew Freiband (Senior Critic, Film, Animation + Video) is part of a team, including RISD alumna Denali Tiller, who are reimagining the 2016 Presidential Debates for a new play showing at the Provincetown Playhouse (133 MacDougal Street, New York) on the 28th January 2017.

Her Opponent is an ethnodramatic re-staging of excerpts from the 2016 presidential debates with gender-reversed casting. The experimental performance will replicate the actual text, gestures, and movements of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump with the aim of exploring the double standards that exist in gendered styles of communication between men and women.

In the development and rehearsals the actors, Daryl Embry, Rachel Whorton, and Andy Wagner, will learn the text, gestures, and movements experiencing what the two then candidates said and how they said it, but with the genders inverted, causing people to revisit thie own personal biases and hopefully developing new insights and different perspectives.
