A solo exhibition of works by Leslie Hirst (Associate Professor, Foundation Studies) is featured at Museo del Merletto in Burano, Italy. The exhibition, entitled Message Threads, is part of the 2015 Programme of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE), in conjunction with La Biennale di Venezia, 56th International Art Exhibition.
Exhibition Dates: 30 May – 01 August 2015 (reception 12:00, 30 May 2015)
Message Threads (il filo dei messaggi) includes eight new works created in 2015 along with several previous drawings and collages. Situatuated between writing and picture-making, the work subtly challenges the ways that we read marks as language. Following her first visit to Burano in 2005, Hirst was inspired to create compositions that fuse words with lace designs. Hirst’s visual language is built from fragments, discarded shapes, and accidental forms excavated from her vast personal archive of antique handwritten letters and photographs of graffiti. These resources represent a vital link to lace-making since they depict a process of time through movement along a continuous line.
