RISD Museum publications honored

RISD Museum publications were recently honored with top American Alliance of Museums and New England Museum Association prizes, awarded by museum peers.

New England Museum Association (NEMA) 2014 Publication Awards:
“Artist/Rebel/Dandy: Men of Fashion,” the fully illustrated publication that accompanied the RISD Museum’s 2013 exhibition of the same name, won top exhibition catalogue honors in the NEMA competition, which “recognizes excellence in design, production, and effective communication in all aspects of museum publishing. Entries are judged by a panel experienced in publication, design, marketing and communications. Awards are given to those entries which most effectively present their message to the intended audience.”

Edited by RISD Museum Costume and Textiles curators Kate Irvin and Laurie Ann Brewer, “Artist/Rebel/Dandy” (Yale University Press) includes lively essays by punk/rock icon and award-winning writer Patti Smith, Rolling Stone’s Glenn O’Brien, and RISD Museum educator Horace D. Ballard Jr., among others. The book offers readers “fresh insights into the power of fashion and textiles as a male pursuit,” say Irvin and Brewer. The book is available for purchase at RISD WORKS, the Museum store.

NEMA also honored “Manual,” the Museum’s twice-annual journal about art and its making, with a second-place award for magazines and newsletters. Sarah Ganz Blythe, the publication’s Editor-in-Chief and the Museum’s Director of Education says, “‘Manual’ is developed to promote a deep engagement with art and design: to offer a forum for the ideas they generate, and stimulate curiosity about how and why we make things.”

American Alliance of Museums (AAM) 2014 Museum Publications Design Competition:
“Manual” won first place for scholarly journals in the AAM competition. Of the competition, AAM’s website noted: “Among the highlights of this year’s winning entries were an interesting mix of risk-taking and classically designed books and catalogs. The jurors commented positively on layouts and font selections that were legible and complemented the content and images.”

Earlier this year, the journal won the American Alliance of Museums EdCom Excellence in Resources Award.

“Manual” is created by RISD Museum staff members, including Director of Education Sarah Ganz Blythe and Assistant Museum Educator S. Hollis Mickey as editors-in-chief, with Museum Publications Editor Amy Pickworth, Graphic Designers Derek Schusterbauer and Colin Frazer (former intern), Museum Photographer Erik Gould, and other contributors.
