Dean of Liberal Arts appointed
To the RISD community,
One of the things we do know about life is that change is constant. Over the last few months we have seen some significant changes in leadership with the most recent being last week’s announcement of a new Dean of Fine Arts, Sheri Wills. I am pleased to announce that after long and careful deliberation and consultation with the Division of Liberal Arts, Daniel Cavicchi has been appointed as the Dean of Liberal Arts.
Daniel has been a faculty member at RISD for many years and is recognized internationally as a scholar and cultural historian. His interest in the everyday has been noted by many, and he is frequently invited to talk about his work internationally. His books include Listening and Longing: Music Lovers in the Age of Barnum (2011), Tramps Like Us: Music and Meaning Among Springsteen Fans (1998), and My Music: Explorations of Music in Daily Life (1993), with Charles Keil and Susan D. Crafts.
Recently, Daniel has been acting Dean of Liberal Arts and has already established a platform for the role that Liberal Arts plays at RISD. As acting dean he has been part of some exciting initiatives and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with him and the other deans in furthering the strategies and reputation of RISD locally and globally.
I know that this will continue to be a time of change, and providing consistency as we move forward is important. I also believe that stability does not mean stasis, and assure you that we will be working hard to continue the work that you have all been developing and championing.
