Balken article in Art in America

An article by Debra Balken (Lecturer, Graduate Studies) will be published in Art in America, May, 2014.

The article, “Harold Rosenberg vs. the Aesthetes,” describes Harold Rosenberg’s ongoing tussling with formalist art critics, which escalated during the 1960s. At stake was his existential view of the artist as a figure who had become increasingly challenged by conformist bureaucracies such as the marketplace, academy and the museum. In contrast to his arch rival, Clement Greenberg and his acolytes, who described art solely as a continuum of experimentations, Rosenberg situated the artist in a wider culture, a place where subjectivity was given its biggest test.
