Fall Updates

Teaching and Learning is one of the overarching themes in the strategic plan and a major focus of its implementation plan this year. Events in the Mapping Learning series, organized by Deans Dan Cavicchi and Joanne Stryker this fall, have provided an opportunity for thoughtful discussions on how we teach and learn at RISD, and the future of teaching in art and design. Mark your calendars for the next two events and stay tuned for additional events this spring.

The campus master planning process is proceeding according to schedule. Annie Newman and planning consultants DSK, hosted 8 charrettes this fall. They are now compiling all of the suggestions from the charrettes into a set of framework options for the whole campus. These will be presented to the campus and other community partners in early spring (watch the website for dates), and the feedback gathered then will inform the selection of one framework which will become the basis of the draft master plan. The draft master plan will be presented to the Board of Trustees in May 2014.

RISD Co-Works (also known as the Critical Making pilot space) is in the final design phase, with construction scheduled to begin in February and completed in July 2014. The space is envisioned as an opportunity to bring together different making practices and different materials to inform new ways of making and knowing.

Phase I of the ISB project, the new addition (new stairs, elevator, seminar rooms, and bathrooms) is on schedule for completion in January. Phase II, mechanical infrastructure (heating, cooling, ventilation equipment in the basement) will begin in late spring 2014.

Through the pilot initiative in partnership with the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation in Abu Dhabi, faculty members Robert Brinkerhoff, Katy Schimert, Anais Missakian, and Holly Hughes have visited Abu Dhabi to select fellows from among emerging Emirati fine artists and hold workshops. The fellows will visit RISD in May.

Proposals have been reviewed, and funds allocated for these faculty funding opportunities: RISD 2050 Fund, Faculty Development fund, Academic Enrichment Fund, and Kyobo Fund. Calls for proposals and information sessions for a spring cycle of the RISD 2050 Fund and the Turner Theatrical and Performance Fund will be announced in the spring.

Search committees for ID, Sculpture, Photography, Foundation Studies, Textiles and Dean of Fine Arts have met and will begin the process of narrowing down the applicant pool after the holiday break.

RISD’s new Assistant Dean of Faculty, Tracie Costantino, will join us in February.

Wishing everyone a restful break and Happy New Year!
