Thomas Sgouros: Drawn to Paint, 1944-2012

In cooperation with Cade Tompkins Projects, RISD Illustration is hosting an exhibition of Professor Tom Sgouros’ work from 24 August until 26 September at Woods Gerry Gallery.

Tom’s work fills all of the space. It’s a complete retrospective, beginning with his time as a student at RISD and his career in editorial illustration, through his remarkably sensitive still-life and landscape paintings. The show dedicates significant space to Tom’s last work, the “Remembered Landscape” paintings he produced from 1991 until his passing last year. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of a beautiful man whose personal warmth and integrity was well-matched by a facile hand and a firm commitment to aesthetic standards.

Tom was much beloved and admired, not only at RISD but in the broader artistic community, and his passing marks the loss of a major figure in the development of the Illustration Department and RISD.

This is a truly beautiful exhibition. Mark Moscone and Cade Tompkins have installed the artwork with exceptional sensitivity, and Woods Gerry Gallery seems made for Tom’s distinguished paintings.

A reception will be at Woods Gerry Gallery on Wednesday, 18 September, from 6-8 PM. Please help us honor Tom and his prestigious career at this event. An invitation is included below. Due to limited space and the extensive guest list which includes Tom’s friends and family, we’re asking that students not be invited to this reception. Please encourage them to see the show, however, as it is bound to impress.
