Staff Employee Engagement Survey – A Strategic Plan Initiative

Since the start of the academic year, RISD’s leadership team has been actively working to plan for and share the results of the employee engagement survey. During the month of October, Division Leadership focused on presenting the results to their leaders and, in the coming weeks, will be further sharing the results within their respective divisions.

A Town Hall meeting will be held after the Thanksgiving holiday to review the next steps in the Employee Engagement Survey process. In the meantime, should you have questions about the results, please contact your division leader.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Invitation from the President:

Dear Campus Community,

For well over a century, RISD has been the preeminent institution of art and design education. As individuals, we each bring talent, effort and wisdom to work each day. As a community of staff and faculty, our collective talent and wisdom is what elevates RISD’s preeminence in the world.

The development of our strategic plan, Critical Making | Making Critical, helped our community place a framework around RISD’s shared values. As RISD moves forward, I am ever mindful that we must stay close to our mission and the values of our institution. Because our ultimate goal is to educate and support artists and designers, we are working to keep tuition low for our students and increase scholarship fundraising.

One of the objectives in the strategic plan is to promote a positive workplace for all of us at RISD. To that end, we made an early investment towards this goal by funding and facilitating the Employee Engagement Survey for staff. We received a response rate of 61% on the survey, and this impressive participation rate indicates your commitment to the continuous improvement of our community. And though the survey results are being shared with you at the departmental level, I would like to invite you to join me in a community conversation to deepen our understanding of the results.

On Wednesday, November 28 from 11:30am-12:30pm, I will host a Community Conversation in the RISD Auditorium. I have asked Candace Baer, Vice President for Human Resources, to provide more information on the results of the Employee Engagement Survey. Following her presentation, members of the audience will be invited to engage in a question-and-answer session with members of RISD’s senior leadership team. There will also be more information about how each of you can participate in focus groups that will be formed as a way of exploring the information that came from the survey. This gathering will also be a celebration of the many positive aspects about working at RISD and the pride our staff feel in being a part of RISD.

RISD’s leadership team is committed to acting on the feedback you provided, and we are very optimistic about the future and what can be achieved by working together.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the struggles that the east coast communities are facing, I am again reminded of the many things our campus has to be thankful for. Wishing you and your families a happy Thanksgiving, and I look forward to our upcoming meeting.
