Day of Remembrance for Donnamaria Bruton-Coutis

The Painting Department invites you to participate in a Day of Remembrance for Donnamaria Bruton-Coutis. Donna was a cherished member of the Painting Department faculty and an active, engaged and generous colleague as well as a terrific artist. Donna knew many people in the RISD community and throughout Providence and the region. Her passing has saddened us this fall and she will be sorely missed. The Painting Department and Donna’s many wonderful friends from the RISD community would like to invite you to two events on Oct 24th, 2012 as described below. We look forward to sharing memories and our love for Donna with all in attendance.

Morning Event:
“Transcendence through art intrigues me. To elevate one’s thought when either making art or viewing it, is for me the ideal state of consciousness.” Donnamaria Bruton-Coutis (1954-2012)

Join the RISD community in celebration of the life of artist and RISD Painting Professor Donna Bruton, through a miniature book making and collage workshop. We will honor Donna’s legacy by spending the morning in
contemplation and art making.

Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Ewing House
41 Waterman Street
Rhode Island School of Design Campus
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The workshop will start at 10 a.m. with instruction on collage and book art. Come for 20 minutes or come for longer. Bring your materials or share ours, including some of Donna’s materials, lovingly donated by her husband, Tim Coutis. Guided meditations every hour at 15 minutes past the hour. Join us when you are able.

Evening Event:
“[Donna’s paintings]… are biographies, based in acute visual consciousness of color and light, and nourished by personal sensations of sound, scent, hearing and touch.” From Cade Tompkins Projects Press Release / Maureen O’Brien and Mary Bergstein

Join the RISD community in celebration of the life of artist and RISD Painting Professor Donna Bruton. We will screen the Newport Art Museum’s Networks 2010 where Donna speaks about her art and hold a mediation to honor her memory and her glowingly spiritual presence. People from many parts of Donna’s life will offer a few words of remembrance – after which the floor will be open to any in attendance who wish to speak.

Wednesday, October 24, 2012
College Building, 5th floor, room 521
