Drummond and Spencer named Dean of Students and Associate Dean
Dear RISD Community,
Nearly a year ago I wrote to you about important changes in the Student Affairs office, highlighting the interim roles I asked Jerri Drummond and Sarah Spencer to take on for this past academic year. There were many changes in the student life areas and many student issues that as a community we worked through together. Jerri and Sarah were central to all of these situations and handled them all with expertise, collaboration, and great care.
It has been clear to me for some time that we are fortunate to have two such experienced and professional staff to lead our student affairs area. I am therefore pleased to inform you that I have promoted Jerri to the position of Dean of Students and Sarah to the position of Associate Dean, allowing the great work they started a year ago to move forward.
Jerri has been at RISD for two years. Initially she came to RISD to oversee the office of student life, residence life and multicultural affairs. Jerri quickly became part of the RISD experience and took on more and more student affairs work. Prior to coming to RISD, Jerri served as Associate Vice President for Student Development at SUNY College of Technology at Alfred. She brings broad experience in student affairs – experience I have relied on for the last year.Jerri has a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling as well as a Ph.D. in Student Affairs Administration.
Sarah has been at RISD for three years and has worked with many of you to support our students. When Sarah first came to RISD she quickly created orientation programs and student activities, and effectively partnered with faculty and the registrar’s office to advocate for student issues. Prior to RISD, Sarah too worked at Alfred, serving as Director of Student Affairs. Sarah has a BA in Sociology and an MS in College Student Personnel.
Jerri and Sarah will work with a dedicated group of student affairs professionals to insure that the student experience outside of the studio/classroom supports and complements the superior experience in the classroom. Together with academic affairs, the deans and the faculty, we will all work to maintain the outstanding RISD student experience our students deserve.
Please join me in congratulating Jerri and Sarah on promotions most richly deserved.
