Liz Collins + Knitting Nation at ICA, Boston

Liz Collins (Asst Professor, Textiles) and an army of  knitters will take over the ICA’s Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater. Part ongoing collaborative performance, part site-specific installation project, Knitting Nation explores aspects of textile and apparel manufacturing, serving as commentary on how we interact with machines, global manufacturing, trade and labor, iconography, and fashion.

In Phase 7: Darkness Descends, five performers are dramatically spot-lit on a dark stage, heightening the presence of the ongoing drone of the manually operated machines as the knitters perform, while Phase 8: Under Construction engages the theme of line in Dance/Draw through the complex interplay of lines across eight knitting machines stationed on various levels of scaffolding.

This the Knitting Nation’s fourth action. Collins received support from RISD’s Professional Development Fund to support this and earlier iterations of the Knitting Nation.
