Current Draft of the Academic Initiatives and Action Steps of the RISD Strategic Plan

September 22, 2011

Dear Faculty,

Attached please find the draft of the academic initiatives of the strategic plan, which you can also find on the Academic Affairs website.

Over the next few weeks these draft initiatives will be reviewed at meetings such as the Faculty Congress and individual division and department meetings.  Additionally, a survey will be sent to all of you early next week to gather feedback about the initiatives and their prioritization.  Once all the meetings have taken place and the survey feedback has been collected the Associate Provost, Deans and I will review all of the information in a working group that includes members of the Steering Committee and the President.  As priorities emerge, we will continue to attach financial models to the components of the plan.  Please note that the operational initiatives are being developed simultaneously, and we will coordinate the two parts of the plan throughout the fall.

The attached is a draft, working document.  As discussions and review of the draft occur through a number of forums (including the faculty survey), faculty will have many opportunities to provide feedback.  This document will remain in draft form until this feedback has been received and considered.  We trust that you will keep this document confidential and internal to RISD in these draft stages.

We have designed a plan for moving forward that allows participation in a broad way.  Special thank to the Associate Provost and the Deans for their diligent work on the development of both the plan and a process for integrating faculty participation.  I also want to acknowledge the important work of the strategic planning working groups and the faculty who served with such commitment last year.  I hope that we can continue to move forward as a community united by our common goal of maintaining and evolving academic excellence here at RISD and in the world.

Best regards,

Rosanne Somerson, Provost
Patricia Phillips, Associate Provost
Anais Missakian, Dean of Fine Arts
