Bill Newkirk appointed Interim Dean, Architecture+Design
Professor Bill Newkirk has been appointed Interim Dean of Architecture + Design. He studied architecture and graphic design at RISD and received a BFA in Graphic Design in 1968. Since 1975 he has taught in the Foundation Studies Division and the Graphic Design Department at RISD. He served as Dean of Foundation Studies from 1989 to 1996 and Department Head of Graphic Design from 2007 to 2010.
From 1968 to 1988 Bill was a designer with Malcolm Grear Designers in Providence, Rhode Island. Projects included book design, corporate image, architectural signage and exhibit design. Since 1988 Bill has worked independently on selected projects including logo design and architectural signs, and catalogs for individual artists. His areas of research include cultural, historical and medium variations in design and image making. Throughout the 1990’s Bill acted as producer of the RISD Cabaret, an intensive, interdisciplinary, performance course and theatrical presentation offered in Wintersession.
