Update from the Provost October 5, 2010
October 5, 2010
RISD Faculty and Staff,
RISD has a long history of working with industry, higher education, and non-profit partners to advance the research activities of the faculty and the educational experience of our students through partnered studios. In 2008, the Partnered Research Working Group (PRWG) was formed “to articulate policy and establish clear and effective organizational practice for the advancement of partnered research projects at RISD.” Over the past two years, this joint faculty and administrative body has worked with Institutional Engagement and Media + Partners to develop best practices for partnership cultivation, partner relations, budgeting, documentation, and other aspects involved in building RISD’s capacity to carry out this work. During this period, Junko Carter in Media + Partners has served as the primary point of contact for faculty working on partnered studios.
As of October 1, 2010 responsibility for the support of partnered studios formally shifted from Media + Partners to Corporate and Foundation Relations in Institutional Engagement. The primary point of contact for faculty seeking support for work in this area will be Pamela Harrington, Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations (email@example.com; 454-6318), who will be working with her staff, Helen Koh and Elizabeth Ithurburu, to provide administrative support for partnered research activities. This change will bring together all corporate relations, whether philanthropic or in the form of partnered research, in one office and will, in close consultation with Academic Affairs, provide a closer connection between partnered studios, other forms of federal and foundation supported research at RISD and the Provost’s Office. David Bogen, the Associate Provost of Academic Affairs, will provide leadership to this effort and will be the contact person for general questions regarding academic research at RISD (firstname.lastname@example.org; 454-6417). In addition, this fall we will be adding a position to the research office in Academic Affairs in the area of pre-and post-grant awarding and compliance and contract administration, to further assist the faculty in proposal development and the management of awards. This position will report to the Associate Provost of Academic Affairs.
Junko Carter will begin a new assignment as the Director of Strategic Alliances, under the direction of President Maeda and the Vice President of Media + Partners, Becky Bermont. Working in close partnership and with direction from the President’s Office, this work will focus on building RISD’s reputation through events and partnerships, and advocating on behalf of art and design in a broader public context.
Media + Partners will continue to support media documentation for partnered studios, including documenting these projects for the risd.edu web site, assisting with public relations and other media pieces where appropriate.
As always, please continue to check the Academic Affairs website for updates, announcement and events.
