Paul Langmuir passes away
Paul Langmuir, Senior Critic, Illustration died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack at home in Providence on April 30, 2010. He was born in Albany on September 15, 1942 and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where he studied at the Atlanta Art Institute. Paul received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1965. He joined the faculty of the Illustration Department in 1982/83 where he taught courses in layout, art direction, poster design and mechanical drawing, which he light-heartedly dubbed “how to draw a straight line.” He retired at the end of the 2006/07 academic year.
Paul worked for advertising agencies in Providence and Boston as an award winning art director before he established his own downtown Providence design studio in 1980. His colleagues in the Illustration Department remember the tall, always dapper Langmuir as an elegant presence and gentle wit who was unfailingly intellectually generous.
A life-long summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, Paul divided his time between Providence and the Vineyard on retiring and fulfilled a desire to document the natural and man-made landscape of the Vineyard. Paul’s watercolors capture the dance of wind on the water and the poetry of rust on hulls as well as the more apparent beauties of vernacular architecture and seascape. His art work was exhibited at the Providence Art Club and the Field Art Gallery on the Vineyard. To see Paul’s watercolors visit http://www.fieldgallery.com
Paul is survived by his wife, Jane, an architect, designer, and one of the principal investigators of RISD’s Universal Kitchen project. He is also survived by their two children, Karl Langmuir and Christian Langmuir, six grandchildren, and his sisters Susan and Lynn Langmuir.
