Heinrich Hermann and the Burden House in the NY Times
The inaugural issue of the New York Times online T Magazine’s “Domesticities”series includes an essay by Pilar Viladas on the Burden house, a mid-20th century masterpiece which was redesigned by Heinrich Hermann (Term Appt., Interior Architecture) after its complete destruction by fire. The Maine seaside house, originally designed by Wallace K. Harrison and Isamu Noguchi, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hermann described some of the challenges of its recreation in the first volume of Int|AR (http://intar-journal.risd.edu). As the Times reports Hermann found ways to maintain the house’s “minimalist elegance even when contemporary building codes presented seemingly insurmountable obstacles.” Click here to read the Times article and see photographs of the house.
