Mimi Cabell (Assistant Professor, Experimental + Foundation Studies) presented her collaborative project, Contributors Inc., at the Conference on Writing on Contemporary Artists at the University of Surrey at the end of October.
Contributors Inc. is a collaborative archive-based artistic research project that works with the information from the contents pages of magazines of art and design. Our purpose in working with this material is to reveal the focus, limits, and exclusions in art’s critical archive. We initially established the project because this information so obviously highlighted the gender imbalance in the contributors of these magazines. Our remit has broadened however, as we realized the potential of this information to communicate the shifting commercial and political concerns in art over time in relation to its limited constitution and obvious bias.
