Exploring Science in the [Art + Design] Studio
Hosted by California College of the Arts, the 2015 AICAD Symposium examines the place, purpose, potential, and role of science in contemporary [Art + Design] education. The symposium is sponsored in part by a National Science Foundation grant, Exploring Science in the Studio.
[Art + Design] have always had relationships to science, whether it be through chemistry (color theory), physics (architecture), or biology and anatomy (figure drawing). Now, in the age of global climate change and rapid technological advancement, science, in both its pure and applied forms, is of increasing importance to artists and designers as both a source of inspiration and as a practical tool.
But what is the relationship between science and [Art + Design] in education? How do artists and designers learn about and use science in their work and how might scientists benefit from the creative imagination of artists and designers?
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Situated in the heart of the Bay Area, a cultural hub of environmental sustainability and technological innovation, CCA’s location provides exciting opportunities for broadly exploring the intersection of [Art + Design] and science. In this spirit, submissions to Exploring Science in the [Art + Design] Studioare encouraged to experiment with form. Structured as a series of talks, panels, poster sessions, workshops, and excursions, the 2015 AICAD Symposium seeks proposals that activate models of integrating science and [Art + Design] in the classroom.
Abstracts and proposals for Exploring Science in the [Art + Design] Studio should focus on the role of science in [Art +Design] education, models for integrating science into the studio classroom, or models for integrating [Art + Design] into science education and scientific inquiry.
We encourage you to think about both natural and applied sciences: Technology & Computer Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc. This call is open to faculty, administrators, students and independent scholars and professionals working at the intersections of [Art + Design] and Science.
