Solar Decathlon 2014 Kickstarter Campaign Launched

In July 2014, RISD will join the twenty teams competing in the Solar Decathlon Europe, a competition that challenges collegiate teams from around the world to design and build a home that is powered exclusively by solar energy and that utilizes innovative energy technology and sustainable architecture. The original Solar Decathlon was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2002 and its European counterpart was established in 2010. The 2014 competition will be hosted in Versailles, France, adjacent to the gardens of the Chateau de Versailles, and will be attended by teams from sixteen different countries and four continents.

The goal of the competition is not only to highlight innovative energy technologies, but also to promote sustainable building practices and expose the public to new ideas about approaching ‘green’ living. For more information about the competition, visit http://www.solardecathlon2014.fr.en.

RISD, Brown University and the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt (FHE) have formed an international team comprised of global leaders in their respective fields. Multiple courses, workshops and student committees dedicated to the projected have been implemented at each university, involving over 200 students and faculty from a wide range of divisions including: Architecture, Engineering, Landscape, Interior Design, Furniture, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Environmental Studies. Support of RISD’s Kickstarter campaign will help to fund student workshops and building costs as the entry is designed and built.
