Fleet Library Lauded as “Amazing” and “Historically Significant”
The RISD Fleet Library, which was established in 1878 and moved into the first two floors of the former Rhode Island Hospital Trust bank in 2006, was named one of the “most amazing university libraries in the world,” by BestMastersPrograms.org. The Library houses 140,000 books, 685,000 images and sound recordings, 1,200 rare artists books and issues from 280 periodicals.
The article labeled the Fleet Library as “the oldest and most influential independent art library in the United States…Due to its historical significance, the library’s collection has become a retrospective that shows the evolution of art, architecture, photography and design. The collection covers textiles, jewelry, ceramics and many other disciplines.”
BestMastersPrograms.org is an education and career website focused on providing prospective graduate students with the information they need to achieve their education and career goals. “The library is at the very core of a school’s learning and research opportunities, and plays a fundamental role in the student’s ability to excel at the college level,” Jeremy Alder, list editor, said. “Because of this, we wanted to highlight some of the world’s best and most interesting college libraries.”
The Fleet Library was also added to the Travel + Leisure list of “America’s Most Beautiful College Libraries.”
