Thomas Sgouros, Senior passes away

It is with sadness that we announce that Professor Emeritus Thomas Sgouros, Senior passed away Monday, December 17 after a battle with cancer.

Tom received his BFA in Illustration from RISD in 1950. He taught in Freshman Foundation in the early sixties and joined the Illustration department in 1973. He served as department head  of Illustration for several terms (1969-1970; 1971-1977; 1979-1983; 1984-1991), and was Chair of the Design Division from 1971-78. Tom was Chief Critic at the EHP during the 1983/84 academic year. He was the holder of the Helen M. Danforth Distinguished Professorship, 1991-1994 and was the recipient of a RISD Professional Development Fund grant in 1988. The RISD Museum holds two of Tom extraordinary works on paper in its collection. Although Tom suffered from macular degeneration for many years he continued to paint exquisite “remembered landscapes” and courageously walk about town and go about his business with great elan. As a human being and an artist, he was an inspiration and will be sorely missed.

The memorial service for Tom Sgouros will be held Sunday, December 23 at 2:00pm at the Unitarian Church (1 Benevolent Street) in Providence.  Tom’s campus colleagues plan a memorial in the Spring.
