Linda Bowab, Professor Emerita dies at 96

Professor Emerita Linda Bowab died at the age of 96 on the evening of January 14, 2010. She is survived by her son Michael and daughters Janet and Janice.

A native of Central Falls, Ms. Bowab studied Fashion Design at RISD in the 1930’s and pursued studies in art and theatre at Brown University and the University of Rhode Island in the 1960s. She joined the faculty of Apparel Design in 1950. Before coming to RISD, she worked a dozen years in the field as a pattern maker and designer for clothing manufacturers throughout New England. Ms. Bowab served as Acting Department Head during the 1972/73 academic year. She led Apparel juniors in a seminal community project at the Meeting Street School in 1977. Ms. Bowab, a remarkable teacher, retired in 1984 having influenced hundreds of students like Nicole Miller and Monique Robidoux, with her high professional standards. Ms. Bowab set a high standard for life after RISD as well. She took weekly yoga class, played an active role at her church, and volunteered at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. Ms. Bowab relished the gatherings of her fellow professors emerita and always arrived to make the most elegant sartorial statement–an inspiration to all. Linda will be deeply missed by all knew and admired her at RISD.
