Update from the Interim Director of the Museum

This winter the Museum features a forty-year retrospective of the drawings of Pat Steir.  A major figure in American art since the 1970s, Steir brings us the poetic language of line, from tiny marks to sweeping gestural waves.  Witness the artist in action in early February, assisted by RISD students in Dennis Congdon’s class, as they cover the walls of the smaller Chace gallery with drawings.  Please join Pat Steir and  friends at the Opening Celebration on Saturday, February 27, 5:30 to 7:30 pm. A series of artist conversations—with Julie Mehretu, with Kathan Brown, with Anne Waldman– extends through March; check the Museum calendar on-line at www.risdmuseum .org for details.  In addition, the student installation competition winners reveal their work in Sitings 2010: Museum as Action at the end of February, while a new installation of contemporary figurative art from the collection will go on view in upper Farago in mid-March.  The Art Shots, a student group who focus on individual works of art, will enliven the galleries with their interpretation Sundays at 2pm, on February 28, March 7, and March 28.

The new process for scheduling classes in the Museum is outlined on www.risdmuseum.org.  Please click on the Academic tab at Learn for detailed information. By making arrangements within the first three weeks of the semester for your class visit, we are able to ensure that more students benefit from engagement with original works of art in the course of their RISD education.

See you in the galleries,

Ann Woolsey
