Admissions and Financial Aid Update January 2010
The Admissions staff has finished most of their recruitment travel for this season and our attention is now refocusing on our application deadlines. Admissions Committee members are in the midst of reviewing the early deadline group of freshman applicants. The graduate deadline is January 21 and faculty will begin the review and decision process within the individual programs in early February. The final freshman deadline arrives on February 15 and transfer applicants have until March 15 to complete our process.
At this point in the application cycle, we are seeing a decrease in application totals in undergraduate categories and an increase at the graduate level. This pattern is similar to what we experienced last year as the financial crisis exploded. Although some measures of world financial health are showing improvement, we know from our frequent conversations with prospective applicants that students and families remain very concerned about their personal financial circumstances and focused on the cost of education and the value of their investment. These financial worries are intense for many and we expect admitted students to be taking a very careful look at all of their college enrollment opportunities later in the spring.
Admissions is working with Media + Partners to prepare print and electronic materials and with other offices to plan activities and outreach for accepted students, who will be notified at various points in the spring and be visiting and exploring their possible RISD futures in April and May.
We are also pleased to welcome Anthony Gallonio to RISD as of January 19 in the position of Director of Financial Aid.
